January’s
NAIFA Washington “Day on the Hill” event was a huge success. There were over 130 attendees and almost
every Local Association set appointments to meet with their legislators in
their respective Districts.
Our
message was to impart to Legislators the value of what we, financial service
producers, have with our clientele and community. It was also important to let our Legislators
know that including the agent/client relationship; it is important as
Washington State moves forward with the implementation of the Affordable Care
Act and having the “Exchanges” trigger by the end of this year.
I
want to thank every producer/agent that took time from their production week to
make their voice heard in Olympia. Also
to Mel Sorensen, NAIFA WA Lobbyist
for putting together a great line-up of presenters! Washington Health Underwriters partnership
and support of this event helped make our presence in Olympia known by our
united voice!
If
you have not already, please send a “thank you” to those Legislators your met with
and maybe set aside time to meet with them for coffee or lunch. Making yourself known and available to them is
important on many levels:
·
Brand
NAIFA to them
·
Be
a good resource on financial services or health care to them
·
Develop
your own leadership skills
·
Be
a liaison for your Local Association and
them
·
Be
better informed
“Hats
off” to New York Life Insurance Company
for sponsoring this year’s “Day on the Hill” and for the 30 NYLC agents they
made a commitment to attend. This could
not have been the success without them.
NYLC understands how important it is to be connected at the local
level!
We
tried some new things like having a ‘Debriefing meeting’ at the end of the day
as well as a common meeting area at the capitol for in-between appointments of
our members. We had great feedback that
let us know what worked and also feedback that will help in the planning for
next year as well.
Knowledge
is power so stay informed, networking is survival so stay connected; be active
is to be involved!
